What Is Meditation

Meditation will relax and quiet your mind, will soothe and open your heart,  and will heal and bring peace to your soul.

Meditation is the practice of silencing the thoughts in your mind to achieve an alternate state of awareness, attention, and compassion. It is the practice of sitting or laying down still, focusing on your breath and reflecting.

According to Psychology Today, some date meditation back to as early as 5,000 BCE, and the practice itself has religious ties in ancient Egypt and China, as well as Judaism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism and Buddhism. Today, meditation is practiced by successful CEOs, celebrities and athletes.

Jeff Weiner, former CEO of LinkedIn, said that pausing to reflect on situations helps him to strategize and work proactively towards long-term goals. He also adds, “part of the key to time management is carving out time to think, as opposed to constantly reacting.”

As Bill Gates writes on his blog, “I now see that meditation is simply exercise from the mind, similar to the way we exercise our muscles when we play sports. For me, it has nothing to do with faith or mysticism. It’s about taking a few minutes out of my day, learning how to pay attention to the thoughts in my head, and gaining a little bit of distance from them.”

Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, spent time in India and Hawaii with spiritual gurus. Benioff told New York Times, “I’m trying to listen deeply, and the beginner’s mind is informing me to step back, so that I can create what wants to be, not what was.”

According to Mayo Clinic, meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can help you carry yourself more calmly throughout the day.
